ABOUT LEDGEWOOD.

Ledgewood is a community in Strongsville, Ohio developed and built by Bob Schmitt Homes in the 1960s-1970s. Ledgewood is more than 300 acres in total, with 325 single family homes and 200 cluster homes. It is located near crossroads of the Ohio Turnpike and I-71 — bounded on the North and East by the Cleveland Metroparks and bounded on the west by Pearl Road. It is within close proximity to all the shopping and dining Strongsville has to offer. The Ledgewood community boasts a clubhouse for social gatherings, an Olympic-size pool, children’s pool, playground, tennis and basketball courts, walking trails, greenspace, and much more.

Bob Schmitt Homes was founded in 1946 by Bob Schmitt. Together with his brother, architect Ed Schmitt, they revolutionized the home building industry with their communities throughout Northeast Ohio. The company earned national recognition in the industry, and with the public, for its integrity and quality, engineering principles, building concepts, and community-planning innovations.

Bob’s vision for Ledgewood was crafting quality custom homes and a top-notch experience while preserving Ledgewood’s unique terrain. The goal was to fit every family’s particular set of needs for their home at an affordable price. Instead of streets with houses, he wanted Ledgewood to be a neighborhood that fostered family and community togetherness. Bob had a sensitivity to the environment and made sure to preserve trees and other natural environmental amenities, making Ledgewood one of the most natural and beautiful communities in the area. Bob was also always conscious of the need to conserve energy, and was a pioneer in energy saving techniques.

Amongst many other awards over the years, Bob was named Professional Builder of the Year in 1976. In 1979 he was nominated to NAHB Housing Hall of Fame, and he also was nominated by President Gerald Ford to the Board of the National Institute of Building Sciences.

Bob Schmitt passed away in 2010 and his brother, Ed Schmitt, passed away in 2014. Mike Schmitt, Ed’s son, has worked for Bob Schmitt Homes for nearly 50 years and owns and operates the business today, continuing on the custom home building legacy in North Ridgeville. Bob Schmitt Homes is celebrating its 75th year in business in 2021 and has built approximately 6,000 homes in Northeast Ohio during this time.
